International Union of Railways (UIC)

The International Union of Railways (UIC) is the international professional association representing the railway sector. UIC’s principal task is to promote rail transport around the world while supporting interoperability with the creation of new international rail standards and facilitating all forms of international cooperation.

Research and innovation are part of the fundamental values of the UIC. In particular, the UIC International Rail Research Board (IRRB) involves all major stakeholders at the global level in joint activities in the field of research and innovation. This working group provides all its members with a unique platform in order to exchange on important common research themes, in the perspective of a better exploration of the research potential worldwide.

Since 2012, the UIC and the Rail Safety and Standards Board (RSSB) have worked together in partnership to develop and maintain SPARK for the benefit of the global railway community. In parallel, the UIC research portal, Railway-Research.org, provides information about rail research events, news about developments in R&D as well as information on special events such as Transport Research Arena (TRA), World Congress on Railway Research (WCRR)... etc.

UIC includes members across the 5 continents with 80 active members, 83 associate members and 37 affiliate members. UIC members may be: railway companies, infrastructure managers, railway or combined transport operators, rolling stock and traction companies or service providers.
